LMI should start carrying fish glue... it's not a replacement for hide but it's great for long open time applications like rims, kerfed lining, and bindings.

Some time ago I conducted a little experiment with hide glue concerning temperature. I placed the container with my hide glue in a pot of boiling water. I kept it boiling for about an hour and the glue temperature reached 185-190 degrees. I then glued three different species of wood with it...spruce, cedar and birch. I allowed it to set overnight. Next day, all three joints held snd the wood did not separate along the joint. So I'm no longer concerned about overheating the glue.

You won't get catastrophic failure but according to some it does weaken the glue. You also have to bear in mind what it will do over a long period of time. You can definitely come across some pieces of old furniture where the glue is very crumbly. I don't know if that was just bad glue or good glue that was badly prepared.

I guess hide glue dries out over time and becomes brittle. Keeping that in mind it was really easy to disassemble instruments assembled with hide glue because you can simply use a palette knife to pry it open slowly. When titebond/PVA/Elmers are used, you need to heat the palette knife (that was how I disassembled an instrument that was improperly glued with white glue)

By the way where can I find those 350 gram strength hide? LMI only carries the 192 gram stuff. Also is it possible to buy fish glue in powders like hide glue?

That company can't ship outside of the US due to "custom restrictions" or whatever that means... every other suppliers ships hide and fish glue outside of the US routinely.

You don't need to clamp it?? That sounds nice. I've always been clamp constrained in my building. I might have to give it a try

Thanks Robbie.

So where are you guys getting your fish? Think I'll try that on the next build.

I've become a big fan of fish glue recently but plan on getting set up with hide glue once I'm in my new shop. The quick set time is going to be very useful for many applications. The ice cube tray idea is spot on.

How long will it last in the freezer?
